Frankfurt take over pole position

Eintracht Frankfurt leapfrog Fürth at the top on the back of a strong first-half showing against Bochum, Paderborn slip further off the promotion pace and Aachen look in real trouble at the bottom.

Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 VfL Bochum

Eintracht Frankfurt moved at least temporarily to the top of the standings with an unendangered home win against Bochum. The 3-0 victory takes the Eagles up to 61 points, two clear of Fürth, who visit Aue on Saturday. Bochum have now taken just one point from their last six games and continue to drift in mid-table.

All over before the break

The hosts perhaps unsurprisingly made the more purposeful start, although Bochum showed every sign of being keen to get stuck in themselves. With 13 minutes played, Constant Djakpa played in a cross that Mohamadou Idrissou met with a diving header, the ball flying wide of the Bochum post. Five minutes on from that, Djakpa set up Idrissou again, the Cameroon frontman's first-time effort bouncing back off the underside of the crossbar. The danger was not over yet though, as Djakpa crossed the ball in again and Sonny Kittel's attempted volley instead found the head of teammate Idrissou, who this time found the back of the net.

Faton Toski planted a free kick just over the bar at the other end midway through the half but that apart there was little to see of VfL as an attacking entity and with 32 minutes on the clock Eintracht doubled their advantage. Bochum defender Marcel Maltritz knocked on a cross from the left, involuntarily teeing up Alexander Meier, who drilled home a sweet shot on the turn from close range, to take his personal season tally up to 16.

Three minutes later it was effectively game over when Erwin Hoffer nodded in a high ball into the box from Djakpa following a corner. Bochum tightened up at the back at the start of the second half, but the damage had been done already, and Eintracht passed up a clutch of opportunities to further boost their goal difference as they finished the game strongly.
