“Disappointed about the result, proud of the performance”

Head coach Dino Toppmöller, captain Kevin Trapp and Rasmus Kristensen assess the Bundesliga meeting at Bayer Leverkusen.

Head coach Dino Toppmöller: “It was a very good Bundesliga match between two teams who try to play very good football. Sadly, not everyone on the pitch was in top form. There was a clear penalty for us. I don’t understand how they didn’t see or at least review it. The boys are down because of that and rightly annoyed. When you perform at a top level against a top team, details make the difference. We’re very disappointed about the result but proud of the performance of this very young team. We’ve now demonstrated in two games against two top European teams that we can hold our own at this level.”

In the end we were very unlucky to lose here.

Kevin Trapp: “It was one of our best performances in Leverkusen in recent years. Leverkusen had more of the play but we also did well and had our opportunities. In the end we were very unlucky to lose here. We had the big chance at the end for Hugo Ekitiké. You can give it [a penalty], even should give it – he’s in the air and he’s shoved and then can’t control the ball anymore. You see that he puts his arm out with Hugo very high in the air.”

Rasmus Kristensen: “Overall it was a good performance from us and we could’ve got something. We weren’t quite sharp enough in the end. A few little things went against us. We’ve lost away from home against a top team.”
