After what was an epic 3-3 draw against Freiburg, head coach Adi Hütter was less concerned with the for-and-against columns and more with the order in which the goals came. After all, when a side takes the lead as opposed to going behind, it is easier to dictate the game.
The Wolves had a 2-1 win away to FC Augsburg first up after the enforced break, but then slipped to a 2-0 defeat at home to Borussia Dortmund. On Tuesday they made the trip to Leverkusen and ran out 4-1 winners, with the scoreline a more than fair reflection of their dominance.
High-octane football
VfL currently sit sixth in the table, but while they are always good value against the top teams, it is their form at the Volkswagen Arena that is currently preventing them from occupying an even loftier position. In terms of home games they are just the 13th best team in the league, but Eintracht will find them a tough opponent to break down, with Wolfsburg having conceded just 34 goals this season – only two other teams have let in fewer. Having said that, the two clubs have met 41 times in the past, and only once has it ended in a goalless draw.
The 42nd clash is expected to be a difficult one, not least due to the intensity that the Green-and-Whites have shown so far this season. After 28 matchdays, they are the team with the most intensive runs to their name (21,001 to be exact), while striker Wout Weghorst sits atop the individual rankings in that particular respect with 2,174.
Timothy Chandler is certainly up for the challenge, saying that “we were firing on all cylinders up front against Freiburg”. And as goalie Kevin Trapp rightly pointed out: “the way we played on Tuesday was a lot of fun”.
