Eagles overpower ten-man Hertha

Eintracht came from behind to win 4-1 at in-form Hertha, with Dost, Silva (2) and Ndicka getting on the scoresheet in a victory that secures the Eagles’ top-flight status for another season.

Krzysztof Piatek gave the hosts the lead against the run of play, but Hertha were reduced to ten men in first-half stoppage time when Dedryck Boyata brought down Dost as last man. Dost’s instinctive finish started the Eintracht comeback early in the second half, before Silva fired the Eagles ahead following a sublime run from Daichi Kamada. Ndicka lashed home Eintracht’s third soon afterwards, with Silva notching his second of the game from Stefan Ilsanker’s pass to complete the scoring.

Personnel: Kostic back from suspension

Adi Hütter rang the changes after Wednesday’s 2-1 DFB Cup semi-final defeat at Bayern Munich, making seven alterations to the side that lost at the Allianz Arena. Filip Kostic was recalled after sitting out the midweek reverse through suspension, with Makoto Hasebe, Danny da Costa, Lucas Torró, Djibril Sow, Kamada and Dost also returning to the starting eleven in Berlin.

First half: Mixed half for hosts

Da Costa, Eintracht’s goalscorer in Munich on Wednesday, went closest to an early opener when he headed a trademark Kostic cross straight at Hertha goalkeeper Rune Jarstein. It was the hosts who struck first, however, Piatek pouncing on Hasebe’s loose pass before burying the ball beyond Kevin Trapp.

In an eventful end to the half, Robert Hartmann awarded the Eagles a penalty and dismissed Hertha defender Boyata for a professional foul on Dost, but the referee opted to review the incident on his pitchside monitor following a VAR check. Boyata’s second yellow card was upgraded to a straight red, while Eintracht’s penalty was changed to a free-kick on the edge of the box. Kostic struck it well, but the Serbian was unable to lift his effort over the wall.

Second half: Eintracht too strong

The Eagles managed to capitalise on their numerical advantage within six minutes of the restart, Dost sticking out a long leg to divert half-time substitute Silva’s cutback beyond Jarstein. Kamada was the architect of Eintracht’s second goal ten minutes later, twisting and turning inside the area before teeing up Silva, who finished off a glorious move with a cheeky back-heel.

Ndicka thumped a loose ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box to extend Eintracht’s lead, before Silva completed the scoring with a confident finish from Ilsanker’s through-ball.

Summary: Clinical second half

Dost’s goal six minutes into the second half was just what the Eagles needed following Boyata’s late first-half dismissal. The Dutchman’s strike swung the momentum back towards Eintracht, whose ruthless showing after the interval lifts them above Hertha and into the top half of the table.
