Younes opened the scoring after just six minutes – Eintracht’s earliest goal of the season so far – but Roland Sallai equalised for Freiburg 13 minutes before the interval. Nils Petersen’s powerful shot gave the hosts the lead for the first time in the match, but Keven Schlotterbeck slid Kamada’s fierce strike into his own net to gift the Eagles a share of the spoils.
Tuta returns
Adi Hütter made two changes to the team that beat Schalke in Eintracht’s fourth consecutive Bundesliga victory on Tuesday. Almamy Toure was recalled in favour of Erik Durm on the right of midfield, with Tuta replacing the departed David Abraham at centre-back. Makoto Hasebe was handed the captain’s armband at the Schwarzwald-Stadion, while Luka Jovic was among the Eagles substitutes once again.
Sallai cancels out early Younes strike
Freiburg had won five of their previous six league games coming into Wednesday’s encounter, but the hosts looked shaky early on and Eintracht took full advantage. Djibril Sow’s defence-splitting pass found Younes, who turned Manuel Gulde inside the penalty area before side-footing past SC goalkeeper Florian Müller to break the deadlock.
The hosts improved after Younes’ opener, however, and restored parity just after the half-hour mark. Ermedin Demirovic collected Lucas Höler’s flick-on before releasing Sallai, who lifted the ball over Kevin Trapp and into the far corner of the net. André Silva and Martin Hinteregger both went close to restoring Eintracht’s lead before half-time, but Müller produced two smart saves to keep the score at 1-1 going into the break.
Kamada the key
Hütter made a change at half-time, replacing Aymen Barkok with Kamada. The Japan international was involved immediately, latching onto a loose ball inside the Freiburg penalty area but scuffing his shot wide of Müller’s goal. Silva was handed another opportunity to test the Freiburg custodian when Höler clipped Filip Kostic’s heel on the edge of the area, but the Portuguese’s free-kick struck the wall and bounced clear.
Clear-cut chances remained at a premium until a scuffed Eintracht clearance was thumped into the far corner by Freiburg substitute Nils Petersen. Jovic entered the fray with just under 25 minutes remaining, but it was Kamada who played a decisive role in rescuing a point for Hütter’s charges. The 24-year-old unleashed a vicious shot from the corner of the box, which Schlotterbeck could only turn into his own net from six metres out.
A point well-earned
Eintracht’s winning streak may have come to an end but this was by no means a below-par performance. The Eagles deserve credit for battling back to claim a draw – a result which lifts them to within two points of fourth-placed Borussia Dortmund.
