“You saw what we’re capable of” – Danny da Costa interview

Full-back Danny da Costa talks about the start to the second half of the season and how he’s settled in at Eintracht.

Danny, is the focus now completely on the next match against VfL Wolfsburg or are you still analysing the draw against SC Freiburg?

Danny da Costa: “We’re concentrating completely on the next match. We had an avoidable defeat against Wolfsburg earlier in the season so we want to make amends for that.”

Why did you only manage to get a point against Freiburg and what do you want to do better at Wolfsburg?

Danny da Costa: “In my view we played very well in the first half. You saw what we’re capable of, particularly in terms of our control of the game and our build-up play. The coach also remarked on that. But we really need to work on taking our chances. While we don’t give much away defensively, we need to be more clinical in front of goal. If we’d done that we would’ve won the game.”

Generally you fared better away from home in the first half of the season…

Danny da Costa: “That doesn’t make it any easier at Wolfsburg. It’ll be at least as tough as Freiburg at home, but I hope we can put in a similar performance to the first half against Freiburg, with the difference being that we take our chances.”

How can the discrepancy between your home and away form be explained?

Danny da Costa: “There’s no simple explanation for it. Perhaps one reason is that in home games, there are situations where you try to do too much. You want to give the fans something. But ultimately we should be happy that we’re performing so well on the road. Any kind of positive away run is a very good thing.”

How do you see your own role at the moment?

Danny da Costa: “In the first half of the season I had a bit of bad luck with my injury, which set me back a bit. Now I feel good, though, and I’m back in top condition physically. I want to play every minute and I always try to put myself in contention. It’s been going well recently since my substitution in the cup game at Heidenheim. Now it’s up to the coach.”

How do you feel being in Frankfurt?

Danny da Costa: “Very good. I’ve settled in here really well and feel happy. While I was out injured I had time to get to know the team and the playing style a bit better. And conversely, the others know me better now. From my first day I felt there’s really good work going on here. The coach takes a lot of time for every player and tries to make everyone a little bit better. I’ve learned a lot and certainly don’t regret the decision to come here.”
