World Cup: Salcedo's Mexico upset Germany

Mexico, whose squad includes Eintracht Frankfurt duo Carlos Salcedo and Marco Fabian, enjoyed a dream start to their 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign on Sunday, beating holders Germany 1-0 in Moscow.

Mexico's shock victory was nothing less than deserved after a passionate, battling display. El Tri constantly caused Germany problems in the first half with their counterattacks, Hirving Lozano firing home the only goal of the game in the 35th minute from one such break. Although the world champions dominated the second period, Salcedo and the wall of green shirts held on for a famous win. Frankfurt midfielder Fabian did not feature, but celebrated wildly with his colleagues at the full-time whistle.

Switzerland earn surprise draw, Serbia win

The next shock came in Sunday's late match when Switzerland held one of the pre-tournament favourites, Brazil, to a 1-1 draw. For the Swiss, Eintracht midfielder Gelson Fernandes was an unused substitute, as was Eagles striker Luka Jovic in Serbia's earlier 1-0 win against Costa Rica, a triumph secured by Aleksandar Kolarov's stunning free-kick.
