Head coach Dino Toppmöller: “We’re very happy to have won a hard-fought game and given the fans a derby victory. Darmstadt were well-organised. We had a lot of possession but could have played with a higher tempo. Overall, it was a decent performance.”
Kevin Trapp: “We knew we’d be up against physical opponents. The goal came from a nice move, but we didn’t create a great deal after that – we have to be honest. We were pretty toothless in the final third, but it’s not easy against a side who sit as deep as Darmstadt. Looking at the positives, we held on for the 1-0 win, which is something we haven’t managed too often in the past. It feels good to have won the game.”
It’s important that we won the game and started the season with a home victory.

Mario Götze: “It’s important that we won the game and started the season with a home victory. The circumstances were difficult, though: our opponents were tough, as was the heat. It wasn’t easy but we could have done better in one or two situations – particularly when it comes to creating chances up front. We can be relatively pleased on the whole. In general, we don’t want to predict what might happen at the end of the season, but rather focus on improving our game.”
