What a year!

Eintracht Frankfurt played 56 matches in 2019, but much has happened off the pitch too. We’ve selected our top five moments from a wonderful year.

120 years of Eintracht Frankfurt

On 8 March 1899, Frankfurter Fußball-Club Victoria von 1899 was founded as the predecessor to Eintracht. 120 years on, Eintracht made 2019 its anniversary year, with the highlight of the celebrations being a huge show with almost 30,000 guests at the Commerzbank-Arena in late June. The moment of the evening was when the league winners from 1959 lifted the trophy to great cheers and applause from the crowd, which brought tears to the eyes of Istvan Sztani and Co.

Building starts on new campus

Eintracht are coming together in one location! At the end of August, the foundation stone of the club’s new first-team campus was laid. Eintracht Frankfurt Fußball AG staff are due to move into the site – which is just a stone’s throw from the Commerzbank-Arena – at the end of 2020. “It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll play better football, but it does mean that you’ll be able to do all the background work that’s required in professional football better and more efficiently,” said board member Axel Hellman.

Declaration of intent on stadium use

Thursday 31 October 2019 was a historic day for Eintracht, as it was on this day that the long-term future of the stadium was decided. Eintracht Frankfurt Fußball AG and the city of Frankfurt reached a broad agreement on the future use and infrastructural development of the Commerzbank-Arena from 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2035. Both parties signed a letter of intent, which set out the key terms of the cooperation and will form the basis of a comprehensive agreement. It marked a landmark for professional football in Frankfurt.

Penalty heartbreak in London

9 May 2019. Stamford Bridge, London. The semi-final of the UEFA Europa League comes down to the drama of a penalty shootout. Jonathan de Guzman puts Eintracht 4-2 up, Baku is so close, but in the end they just fall short. There are countless stories we could tell from that evening, but the images that stand out are the fantastic scenes between the players and fans in spite of the defeat. It was the end of an incredible Europa League campaign which will no doubt live long in the memory of every Eintracht supporter.

Late comeback against Hoffenheim

It’s early March 2019. The Eagles have made a great start to the year, going unbeaten in their first eight competitive games ahead of the home meeting with TSG Hoffenheim. However, the visitors prove to be tricky opponents and lead 2-1 until the 89th minute, despite playing nearly half an hour with 10 men. Eintracht refuse to give up, though, launching wave after wave of attacks and eventually equalising through Sébastien Haller. Then, in the sixth minute of added time, the unthinkable happens: Haller chips the ball to the far post, where substitute Goncalo Paciencia rises high to head in the winner!
