2020 in review

One issue has undoubtedly dominated 2020: coronavirus. Yet almost every month has also had its bright spots.

January

The year began with an away win for Eintracht Frankfurt as they ended a seven-match winless run by beating Hoffenheim 2-1.

February

Two wins in the space of 10 days against Leipzig in the league and cup were followed by a 1-1 draw at Fortuna Düsseldorf and then a 5-0 demolition of Augsburg at home – Eintracht’s biggest win of the past 12 months.

March to May

A period of pandemic confusion and state of emergency in both sport and society. From the first match behind closed doors against FC Basel to the hiatus in the second half of the season and the first step back to normality, which started with a 3-1 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

June

In the rearranged fixture away to Werder Bremen on 3 June, Eintracht won 3-0 thanks to an André Silva goal and a brace from Stefan Ilsanker, who had only come on in the 81st minute. Makoto Hasebe also played his 308th Bundesliga game, drawing him level with Cha Bum-kun as the Asian player with the most appearances in the German top flight.

July

Silva’s back-heel goal after a mazy run by Daichi Kamada in the 4-1 win at Hertha BSC on 13 June was voted Goal of the Month in Germany.

August

Following a brief summer break, Eintracht began their pre-season preparations at home in Frankfurt and were knocked out of the UEFA Europa League round of 16 with a 1-0 defeat in the second leg at Basel.

September

The first match at the newly named Deutsche Bank Park was played on 6 September, when Eintracht Women beat Werder Bremen 5-1 at the stadium, which was renamed in July.

October

The men’s team win their first home match at Deutsche Bank Park with another 2-1 victory over Hoffenheim.

November

Kevin Trapp enjoyed his first win as goalkeeper for Germany as the national team won 1-0 against Czech Republic.
In the Bundesliga, the Eagles drew all three of their games.

December

After nine league matches without a win, Eintracht managed to claim all three points in their last outing of the year with a 2-0 victory at Augsburg. It means they can be satisfied with where they stand in ninth place with 17 points from 13 matches, still in touch with the upper echelons of the table.
