“Build on our recent displays”

Almamy Toure is back! The defender discusses his time on the sidelines, his return to training, the chances of featuring at Bochum and respect for the opposition.

Almamy Toure was one of Eintracht’s key players in the decisive period last season, and was a fixture in the starting line-up through to the UEFA Europa League final as well as in the early part of 2022/23. However, he sustained a thigh injury at Hertha Berlin on Matchday 2 and it wasn’t known how long he’d be out for. When the defensive powerhouse was able to briefly resume full team training last week, he suffered another setback through illness. But on Wednesday the 26-year-old was back – and gave his thoughts to EintrachtTV afterwards.

It’s great to have you back, Almamy. What was it like for you to be out on the pitch again?
“Everything went really well. I’m very happy to be back. I was out for a long time and then I was ill recently too. I’m looking forward to helping the team again soon.”

What was it like for you not being able to play football?
“It’s never easy when you’re injured and it was especially difficult for me because I’d played a lot of consecutive games before it happened. I’m very grateful to the medical team and the staff for helping me return sooner than expected.”

The main thing is to build on our displays from the last few weeks.

Do you think you could be back in the squad to face Bochum on Saturday?
“I don’t know. I’ve only been back in full training for one day so the next matchday might be too soon. But we’ll have to see and discuss with the coach whether I could play for a little bit. I’m ready to do so.”

What sort of game are you expecting at Bochum?
“It’ll be really tough for us. Our experience last year should serve as a warning: we played in the Europa League during the week and then lost at Bochum the next weekend. So we’ll need to be wide awake, focused on the task and well prepared if we’re to take anything from the game.”

How significant is the match in terms of the team’s development as a whole?
“The main thing is to build on our displays from the last few weeks, to perform just as well and to keep going so that we can pick up as many points as possible and be in the best possible position going into the winter break. As such, every game is very important.”
