The situation
Eintracht’s European journey is over for this season following the 2-1 home defeat by Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the UEFA Europa Conference League on Thursday. “We need to show a different side of ourselves at the weekend, play with a different intensity over the 90 minutes and show ourselves that we can produce a different performance,” said board member for sport Markus Krösche. “We need to shake off our inconsistency. We need to be aware that now is when it matters in the Bundesliga. We need to do everything we can to get back into European competition next season.”
VfL Wolfsburg visit Deutsche Bank Park on Sunday 25 February (kick-off 15:30 CET) on a winless run that stretches back to an away triumph at Darmstadt 98, a run of results that has left them 12th in the table. “We have to go full throttle on Sunday and show a reaction,” said Timothy Chandler ahead of this game.
The Eagles haven’t won any of their last three Bundesliga matches either, but they have at least taken maximum points in three of their last four league outings on home soil. That has helped Eintracht to sixth place in the standings, with the aim now to maintain or ideally extend the four-point lead over Werder Bremen in seventh.
Looking back
Eintracht have not managed to get the better of the Wolves in the teams’ last five competitive meetings; in fact, they have lost their last two home encounters against them without scoring a single goal. The last time the Eagles took all three points at home against Wolfsburg was in April 2021 – so it’s high time to buck that trend on Sunday!
