Deutsche Bank Park hosts its final game of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season at 15:30 CEST on Saturday 27 May, when Eintracht take on SC Freiburg knowing they have to win to secure a place in Europe via the league.
We’re desperate to win our last home game of the campaign.
Djbril Sow
“We’re desperate to win our last home game of the campaign. We don’t know how the others will get on – anything’s still possible,” said Djibril Sow, adding that Saturday’s clash could also play an important role ahead of the upcoming DFB Cup final in Berlin. “We’re going to give our all so that we’re also well prepared for the cup final. You need to be full of confidence for that.”
Fifth-placed Freiburg, meanwhile, are already guaranteed a place in the Europa League at the very least but still harbour hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.
Here are the permutations:
Eintracht will qualify for the UEFA Europa League if…
- ...they win the DFB Cup final.
- ...they beat Freiburg, Wolfsburg (vs. Hertha BSC) and Leverkusen (vs. VfL Bochum) lose and the Eagles make up a six-goal swing in goal difference on Leverkusen, or…
- ...they beat Freiburg by five goals, Leverkusen lose and Wolfsburg fail to win.
Eintracht will qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League if…
- ...they lose the DFB Cup final but beat Freiburg, Wolfsburg lose and Leverkusen avoid defeat.
- ...they lose the DFB Cup final but beat Freiburg by five goals, Wolfsburg fail to win and Leverkusen avoid defeat.
Memorable afternoon for Kolo Muani and Trapp
For one Eagles player, Saturday’s game could prove to be the icing on the cake of a stellar personal campaign. Striker Randal Kolo Muani has been directly involved in 25 goals in the Bundesliga this season – more than any other player. If he manages to keep Bayern’s Jamal Musiala (21) at arm’s length, he will become the first Frankfurt player to finish top of the combined goals and assists chart in Germany’s top flight since detailed data collection began in 2004/05. With 14 league goals so far – two behind Werder Bremen’s Niclas Füllkrug –Kolo Muani could even end the season as the Bundesliga’s leading goalscorer.
Kevin Trapp is also set to make history this weekend. The 32-year-old is expected to make his 235th Bundesliga appearance for the Eagles, which would lift him above Dr. Peter Kunter and make him the outright record appearance holder for an Eintracht keeper in the division. A victory would make that achievement even sweeter.
