“Maybe I’m not normal…”

Having recently signed a new contract, Makoto Hasebe talks about the reasons for extending his stay, looks ahead to the future and also addresses current issues.

Makoto Hasebe on…

…his contract extension: “Obviously I’m extremely happy that I’ll be continuing my playing career until the end of next season and will still be involved at the high level of the Bundesliga. I want to play football for as long as my body allows. Normally people retire at my age, but maybe I’m not normal (laughs). I can already start to learn from the likes of Markus Krösche or Oliver Glasner.”

…his relationship with Eintracht: “I never would’ve thought I’d get to stay at Eintracht for so long. I’ve done a lot for the club and in return I’ve also got a lot back from the club and the fans. I can’t thank them enough. I want to give something back to the club, whether it’s in a coaching capacity or as a brand ambassador – everything is possible.”

…the inconsistent performances: “We talk a lot with each other and we all want to play better. Not everyone’s playing at their best currently but that happens sometimes. We need to stick together as a team and keep going.”

…dealing with pressure: “Of course we’re under pressure at the moment, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be a negative thing. If it makes us approach the next match in a more focused way and we win, then we can start looking up again. A certain relaxedness is also important, though.”
