Eintracht were the dominant side for much of the match, but for all their possession they often struggled to break down a deep-lying visiting team, who waited patiently for chances on the counter-attack. Following a goalless first half, Bremen took the lead against the run of play through Josh Sargent, but Adi Hütter’s side responded well and equalised through André Silva shortly afterwards.
Abraham returns
After missing the trip to Munich last week with a knock, Eintracht captain David Abraham was back in Hütter’s side today, replacing Tuta in defence in what was the only change from Matchday 5.
Hosts on top
Bremen set out their stall early on, happy to concede possession to Eintracht and sit back in their own half. The Eagles probed and had the first sight of goal in the ninth minute when Daichi Kamada swung over a cross to the far post from the left wing, but Bas Dost was unable to direct his header on target. Hütter’s men thought they had taken the lead their dominance deserved just after the half-hour mark when Kamada prodded in on the rebound after Silva’s shot had been saved, but the goal was disallowed after a video review ruled that the Portuguese striker had been marginally offside in the build-up. Goalkeeper Kevin Trapp was largely a spectator up until half-time, as Eintracht’s robust display and superior passing kept Bremen away from his penalty area.
Silva to the rescue
The second period continued in the same vein as the first until the visitors took the lead out of the blue in the 51st minute, as Sargent drilled past Trapp on the counter-attack. Eintracht needed to respond – and respond they did. Hütter’s men increased the intensity of their play, getting forward with greater intent and using the spaces out wide, and they levelled the score when Silva slid in at the near post to finish Kamada’s low cross from the right. That sparked a fierce spell of pressure from SGE, with Dost hitting the outside of the post from a tight angle moments later before Silva curled an effort wide from the edge of the box and Abraham had a shot saved from a similar position. Try as they might, however, Eintracht could not find a way through again and had to settle for a point.
Summary
Eintracht enjoyed greater possession and created more scoring opportunities, but ultimately either the final ball was too inaccurate, or wayward finishing prevented them from adding to the scoreline. A draw was the least the team deserved, and given the pressure exerted in the second half, they will have felt this was a game they could have won.
