“Totally avoidable”

Board member for sport Markus Krösche, head coach Dino Toppmöller and Jens Grahl were frustrated with the 2-0 loss at Aberdeen but are eager to move on from the defeat.

Board member for sport Markus Krösche: “We were too sloppy, made too many simple mistakes and couldn’t find any solutions going forward. We tried to get behind their defence with long balls, but that didn’t work. The defeat was deserved but avoidable, because we weren’t focused and determined enough defensively in both situations [for the two goals].”

We were expecting things to go differently.

Head coach Dino Toppmöller: “I’m frustrated that we lost the game. It was totally avoidable. We had chances – three or four clear-cut chances – but if you don’t put them away you can’t win the match. We also made careless mistakes at the back, but there are positives to take away from tonight too. Elias Baum, for example, made his full debut and did very well. Our focus is now on Leverkusen, which will be a very difficult game. We’re looking forward to the challenge and will quickly put the game against Aberdeen behind us.”

Jens Grahl: “We were expecting things to go differently. We have to put it behind us now and concentrate on Sunday. We came here to win, which unfortunately didn’t work out. We had a lot of possession and a few good chances, but we didn’t manage to score. Now the focus has to be on Leverkusen, which is a very important game for us.”
