The DFB-Pokal Win 1988: Eintracht's Last Trophy

In 1988 a blonde guy from Hungary became Eintracht's hero - read the review of the final and SGE's fourth triumph.

The 1988 DFB-Pokal final took place in Berlin, like it will on Saturday. On their route to the last match of the campaign the Eagles overcame some big teams – their opponents were Schalke 04, SSV Ulm, Fortuna Düsseldorf, Bayer Uerdingen and in the semi-final Werder Bremen. Apart from Ulm all of the teams had been former cup winners already.

Cup Hero Lajos Detari

The team Eintracht met in Berlin was VfL Bochum in their second DFB-Pokal final. For a long time it was a tight match until, with ten minutes to go, VfL striker Thomas Epp – who at a later stage joined Eintracht – fouled our Hungarian midfield wizard Lajos Detari and a free-kick was awarded. Detari himself stepped up and hit a beautiful curled shot into the top corner of the goal! The 1-0 stood after all and the Eagles lifted the cup for the fourth time. It is their very last trophy win up until … until, maybe Saturday?
