Late defeat in Wolfsburg

Bas Dost was on target for Eintracht at the Volkswagen Arena but Wout Weghorst’s late double earned VfL Wolfsburg a 2-1 victory.

Dost fired Eintracht into the lead from the penalty spot 18 minutes into the second half, before Weghorst struck twice in the final quarter of an hour to inflict a first defeat on the Eagles since Matchday 5.

Silva ruled out

Andre Silva was deemed unfit to face the Wolves after suffering a muscular injury in the draw with Borussia Dortmund last weekend. The Portuguese forward was replaced by former VfL frontman Bas Dost in one of two changes to the side that started Saturday’s 1-1 draw. Stefan Ilsanker was also recalled in midfield in place of Aymen Barkok.

Chances at both ends

Eintracht’s goal came under severe pressure in the early stages, with Xaver Schlager’s deflected effort almost giving VfL the lead inside the opening ten minutes. Maximilian Arnold sent a free-kick sailing over the crossbar from a tight angle not long afterwards, before Kevin Mbabu’s header was palmed to safety by Kevin Trapp.

The Eagles grew into the game as the half wore on, Djibril Sow testing Koen Casteels with a curling effort from the edge of the penalty area before dragging a shot wide from a similar position moments later. Maximilian Philipp went close to putting the hosts ahead late in the half, but Evan Ndicka managed to head the 26-year-old’s shot off the line.

Heartbreak for Eagles

Sow continued to be Eintracht’s liveliest player after the restart, firing straight into Casteels’ arms eight minutes into the second half. Filip Kostic should have put the visitors in front when he blazed over in a one-on-one with Casteels, but SGE had Trapp to thank for keeping the score level moments later with a superb double save to deny Philipp and Weghorst.

The Eagles were awarded a penalty when John Brooks was adjudged by VAR to have bundled over Martin Hinteregger, allowing Dost to coolly slot home the opener. However, Wolfsburg were awarded a penalty of their own for a handball by Stefan Ilsanker, and Weghorst made no mistake from the spot. The game appeared to be petering out into a draw, but Weghorst drilled Schlager’s pass beyond Trapp with two minutes remaining to earn the hosts all three points.

Summary: So near yet so far

It was easy to see why Wolfsburg have yet to taste defeat in the Bundesliga this season. The hosts took the game to Eintracht early on, but Hütter’s charges deserve credit for keeping VfL at bay before raising their game in the second half. In the end, they were unfortunate to leave the Volkswagen Arena empty-handed.
