“That’s how we want to play”

There was disappointment over the Eagles’ cup exit but also pride in their reaction in the second half, setting a standard to follow in the league.

Board member Fredi Bobic: “I find the #blacklivesmatter movement really good, and we were able to make a statement at the right time in a very clear way with the shirt. Indeed, our main sponsors from America, exemplify diversity, something I’ve been able to see myself in person. Eintracht Frankfurt has stood for diversity for a long time, so it all fitted. We wanted to show today what we and what the lads stand for. The boys wore the shirt with pride. Sport has the power to build bridges, and we try to make those bridges accessible for the general public through campaigns like this. I’m pleased it got such a positive response.”

Head coach Adi Hütter: “Bayern were clearly better in the first half. We didn’t get stuck in, didn’t build up any pressure and were too passive. I’m particularly pleased for Danny that he scored the equaliser. The winning goal was unlucky because we were the better team after the break. Credit for the way we played – we even had more possession in periods. We’re disappointed but very proud, because not many people would’ve expected that from us.”

Martin Hinteregger: “We produced a good performance and had Bayern on the ropes. The first half wasn’t what we wanted. After the break we were strong, and that’s how we want to play. It’s cruel that Bayern scored from one of two chances. We defended more bravely from the front, and if you do that you can force Bayern into mistakes. It’ll be a very different game away to Hertha Berlin on Saturday. We need to play like we did in the second half tonight.”
