Hard to beat

VfL Wolfsburg have set a new club record by going unbeaten in their first 10 league matches this season.

Form: Going well

Wolfsburg host Eintracht on Friday evening brimming with confidence. For the first time in the club’s history, the Wolves have gone through their first 10 matches of a Bundesliga season unbeaten, putting them fifth in the league. They recently went on a three-match winning streak before being held 2-2 away to Köln last time out for what was their sixth drawn of the season. The Wolves have won their last three home matches, with the 5-3 victory over Werder Bremen being a real attacking masterclass. The whole team is in fine form at the moment, particularly Dutch striker Wout Weghorst, who has scored seven goals in the past seven games.

Tactics: Intensity combined with stability

Oliver Glasner’s team tend to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Jerome Roussillon, John Anthony Brooks, Maxence Lacroix and Ridle Baku have made up the back four of late, with Maximilian Arnold and Xaver Schlager as protection in front of them. The attacking midfield trio currently comprises Renato Steffen, Josip Brekalo and Maximilian Philipp, with the latter coming back into the starting line-up last week due to Admir Mehmedi suffering from an Achilles problem. The centre-forward position very much belongs to Weghorst – the 28-year-old has notched up seven goals and one assist so far this season, giving him an involvement in exactly half of VfL’s 16 goals.

One to watch: Koen Casteels

The Belgium international is one of the top goalkeepers in the Bundesliga and a key factor in Wolfsburg’s success. He has already kept three clean sheets so far this season, with only Bayer Leverkusen’s Lukas Hradecky ahead of him in that category (four). Kicker magazine has given him an average rating of 2.78 per match (the lower the better), which is not only the highest score for Wolfsburg but also 12th overall in the Bundesliga. He also leads the league with a save percentage of 74.2 per cent – our own Kevin Trapp is third on 69.2%.
