Schalke wear down Frankfurt

A 2-0 home victory against Eintracht Frankfurt sees FC Schalke 04 take third place in the table on Friday evening. Gerald Asamoah and Jefferson Farfan supplied the goals.

Superb defensive performances by Schalke and Frankfurt dominated the first half. Neither side was able to create much danger, although occasionally there was a hint of threat after set pieces.

Close headers

Marcelo Bordon failed to score twice with a header, while Ioannis Amanatidis wasted the best opportunity on the other end, when he headed wide as well.

After the break Jan Zimmermann, who came on for injured Frankfurt keeper Oka Nikolov at half time, let a Jefferson Farfan effort slip through his hands and Maik Franz had to clear off the line. There was now a bit more pace, which also gave Eintracht more room to combine. Amanatidis saw a great shot go wide just before the hour.

Schalke too clever

The goal all of Schalke's superb fans had been waiting for then finally arrived: Gerald Asamoah, a substitute for Levan Kenia, used both head and shoulder to beat Zimmermann from short range.

After Pirmin Schwegler was sent off for Frankfurt, Jefferson Farfan converted a penalty in injury time following a foul on himself by Zimmermann. Overall a deserved victory due to an improved attacking intend by Schalke in second half.
