Restart: 2-1 Home Win!

The Eagles came back from being 0-1 down (Kruppke 5') with two goals of Alex Meier (11' and 22') to gain spot 2 in the standings. New signings Butscher and Amedick both featured in the back four.

Eagles manager Armin Veh had to replace three starters: Anderson and Schwegler are injured and Idrissou found himself on the bench after coming back from his injury. Both new signings Amedick and Butscher started in the back four, the latter replaced Djakpa on the left. Rode and Lehmann featured in denfensive midfield while Hoffer was the only striker, supported by Matmour, Meier and Köhler in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Eintracht started promising with two early opportunities with a Hoffer goal that was called offside and a decent cross by Jung which Köhler was not able to control. The second chance was followed by a counter attack of Braunschweig, Kumbela crossed in after a good run and Kruppke headed in from short disctance (5’).

The Eagles kept pressing though and a decent Butscher cross found Meier in the box who headed in for the equalizer (11’). Soon after Matmour and Rode carried the ball forward in a fast passage of play but Rode’s attempt was just over the bar.

Then Köhler took a corner and found once again Alex Meier who captained the team today – and once again Eintracht’s current top scorer converted with a header – 2-1 (22’)! It was Meier’s 10th of the season, he has now scored a brace in each of his three Bundesliga 2 appearances against Braunschweig. And he nearly added to that tally when he volleyed a promising attempt over the bar (25’).

36,200 witnessed an interesting match in freezing temperatures with lows at -11 degrees Celsius. Braunschweig controlled the last 15 minutes of the first half with some decent chances, Nikolov saved a Reinhardt attempt (30’) and a couple of attempts from set pieces were off target. It was a deserved half time lead for Eintracht though backed up by 74% possession.

Armin Veh made no changes to his team and Hoffer had a go in minute 48 when he was set up by Amedick but his shot went over the bar. The match then calmed down up until Matmour charged through on the right and passed into the box where Köhler was unlucky not to find the target (64’). Shortly after Meier sent off Jung on the right who passed it back to Meier after a swift run but the attempt was saved for a corner, as was Köhler’s attempt following a Matmour cross (71’).

Idrissou came on for Köhler (73‘) and eight minutes later also Korkmaz for Hoffer. The Eagles now stood deep and Braunschweig kept trying but despite a Boland shot off target did not get any more opportunities to score.

The win shifted Eintracht into spot 2 in the standings resulting from both Fürth and St. Pauli losing this matchday and Düsseldorf’s draw This leads to a top clash on matchday 21 when the Eagles will travel to Düsseldorf to challenge them to go top of the league (Monday 13th of February at 20.15h CET).
