Just the one change
Birthday boy Oliver Glasner made a single change to the side who drew 0-0 at Augsburg on Matchday 2, with Daichi Kamada recalled in place of Filip Kostic, who was left out of the squad.
Deserved lead
With rain pouring down at the SchücoArena, the Eagles enjoyed more of the possession early on, but there were no notable chances until the opening goal arrived on 22 minutes. It was a brilliant passing move from Eintracht, involving Hauge himself, who then finished it off from Erik Durm’s cut-back for his second goal of the season. Rafael Borré could have made it 2-0 when he latched onto Ajdin Hrustic’s lob over the top, but the Colombian just could not get the required finish on it (35’).
Bielefeld, who had hardly threatened up to that point, then came to life at the end of the first half, but Kevin Trapp was equal to rather harmless efforts from Fabian Klos (42’) and Florian Krüger (43’), and the half-time whistle was a welcome one for Frankfurt.
Bielefeld pressure pays off
The hosts came out fired-up for the second half, but the first opportunity fell to Eintracht on the counter, as Christopher Lenz crossed for Borré, who couldn’t direct his header goalbound under pressure (52’). Hauge then came close to a second goal four minutes later when the ball was cleared to him from a cross, but he scuffed a difficult volley wide.
The momentum then began to shift in Bielefeld’s favour and they had their best chance of the game so far in the 66th minute, when Robin Hack struck the upright. That was followed by a double chance for substitute Bryan Lasme and Hack in the 76th minute, before Martin Hinteregger blocked the ball on the line moments later. An equaliser seemed near, and it eventually arrived in the 86th minute, when Klos laid the ball off for substitute Patrick Wimmer, who fired an unstoppable shot past Trapp.
Due to an earlier injury, eight minutes were added on at the end, during which both teams tried to find a winner, but to no avail.
Summary: Fair result
Although Eintracht were the better side for about an hour, they cannot have too many complaints about the final result, having come under sustained pressure from the home side in the final half-hour. The Eagles can now regroup over the international break before their next match at home to VfB Stuttgart on Sunday 12 September.
