One memorable win and three heart-breaking defeats

Eintracht Frankfurt may not boast the best of records against Bayern Munich in the DFB Cup, but the Eagles have nevertheless recorded one important cup victory against Saturday's opposition. We recall previous meetings with Bayern in the competition.

The teams have only met four times in the DFB Cup over the years, and although none of the fixtures have taken place in Munich, Eintracht have only managed to score in one of the encounters. It will come as no surprise, therefore, that SGE have only posted one victory against Bayern, with that success coming during the Eagles' triumphant cup campaign in 1974. The men from Munich have won the other three matches, including the 2006 final.

13 April 1974: Semi-final, Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 Bayern: Bayern enjoyed tremendous success in what was a World Cup year and would go on to win the Bundesliga title and become the first German club to lift the European Cup. Coach Udo Lattek had all his big stars available, including Sepp Maier, Franz Beckenbauer, Paul Breitner, Uli Hoeness and Gerd Müller, but after a goalless first half, Bernd Hölzenbein put Eintracht in front in the 49th minute. Hoeness equalised shortly afterwards (60') before Breitner's penalty gave Bayern the lead (62'). Maier saved a spot-kick from Jürgen Grabowski moments later (63') but Thomas Rohrbach's leveller for Eintracht (63') appeared to pave the way for extra time. However, after Hölzenbein was adjudged to have been fouled once again, Jürgen Kalb buried the third penalty of the game to give the Eagles a 3-2 victory and a place in the final, sending the 62,000 fans at the Waldstadion into raptures.

19 August 1989: First round, Eintracht Frankfurt 0-1 Bayern: Jörg Berger's Eintracht side went up against a Bayern team led by Jupp Heynckes, then in his first spell as coach at the club. Bayern would eventually emerge victorious thanks to a 34th-minute winner from Klaus Augenthaler, who smashed the ball in from 50 yards out. Goalkeeper Uli Stein scrambled back in vain, unable to save what would later be named as Goal of the Year.

29 April 2006: Final, Eintracht Frankfurt 0-1 Bayern: Eintracht reached the final in Berlin for the first time in 18 years in a match coach Friedhelm Funkel compared to "David versus Goliath" shortly before kick-off. The Eagles put in a superb display but were repeatedly denied by the outstanding Oliver Kahn, with Claudio Pizarro's goal ultimately enough to seal the win for Bayern.

28 October 2009: Round of 16, Eintracht Frankfurt 0-4 Bayern: This game produced the biggest margin of victory between the teams in the competition. A brace from Miroslav Klose and an effort from Thomas Müller within the first half-hour set Bayern on course for victory. A further goal from Luca Toni put the result beyond all doubt for Louis van Gaal's charges, who lifted the trophy once again six months later.
