“Nothing to lose in Munich” - Mijat Gacinovic interview

Mijat Gacinovic has a healthy respect for Bayern Munich, but he and his Eintracht team-mates travel south without pressure, as they have nothing to lose against the record champions.

Even though you’re away from home against Bayern, what are your chances of success?
Well, they have so many good players. Bayern Munich are always the favourites, whoever and whenever they play, even though they’ll rest a few players because of the game against Real Madrid. They do that every week and still win. As for us, we need to be more aggressive than we have been in recent weeks. And we have to approach it positively: you can’t lose in Munich.

In your opinion, what’s been missing in recent games?

I don’t think we’ve been playing badly at all. The last home game is a perfect example of that. We should’ve gone 1-0 up and then the game would’ve turned out very differently. But that’s football: you don’t take your chances and then you concede one at the other end. That was a very disappointing defeat on Saturday.

Bayern have a big game against Real Madrid on Wednesday. Could that be an advantage for you?

It could be. Obviously the Champions League is now more important than the league for Bayern as they’re already Bundesliga champions. Bayern always want to win, though, especially at home. They won’t go easy on us.

What’s the best tactic when playing Bayern? Is it to try to get forward or to park the bus?
I believe you need to find a balance. If you park the bus, they’ll find a way through at some point – Bayern have too much quality. They have two or three good players in every position. They’re so quick and technically gifted, and they’re clinical in front of goal. And now they have a really good aggression about them under Jupp Heynckes. That combination is unique and that’s why I reckon they’ll knock Real Madrid out of the Champions League too.
