Defeat in Madrid

Despite a goal from Jonathan Burkardt, Eintracht went down 5-1 away to Atlético de Madrid.

Eintracht coach Dino Toppmöller decided against making any changes to his starting line-up and opted to keep the faith with the team that won 6-4 away to Mönchengladbach on Bundesliga Matchday 5.

Up against it right from the off

In the fourth minute, Giuliano Simeone got the better of Nathaniel Brown. Arthur Theate attempted to deal with the ensuing pass into the middle but merely succeeded in teeing up Giacomo Raspadori, who had the easiest of tasks to stab it home from just outside the six-yard box.

Three minutes later, Farès Chaibi got a decent shot away but it took a deflection and flashed just wide of the right-hand post.

Struggling to get a hold of the match

Atléti then dominated for the rest of the first half and Eintracht’s defence had all sorts of problems dealing with their dangerous raids down the flanks. The home side were also solid at the back, enabling them to control the pattern of play from one end of the pitch to the other.

Le Normand doubles the lead

A corner in the 33rd minute saw Toppmöller’s side leave the near post open, which allowed Antoine Griezmann to send the ball into the box for Robin Le Normand to fire home and make it 2-0.

3-0 courtesy of Griezmann

In time added on at the end of the first half, Julian Alvarez took the ball past Robin Koch and centred for Griezmann, who made the most of the chance. Half-time came with Eintracht three goals adrift and facing a seemingly insurmountable task.

Burkardt pulls one back

The Eagles started the second half on the front foot, showing a lot more grit than they did in the opening period, and managed to reduce the deficit in the 57th minute. A long ball from Chaibi was laid off to perfection by Ansgar Knauff in the penalty area and Jonny Burkardt slotted home from seven metres out.

Immediate response from Atlético

Unfortunately for Eintracht, they then failed to cover the near post on another corner. Simeone got to the ball just ahead of Koch and headed it into the back of the net to restore the three-goal cushion. This enabled the hosts to dictate play once more and see out the rest of the match.

Amenda gives away late penalty

Aurele Amenda then handled the ball in his own box in the 82nd minute, with Alvarez converting the spot-kick to put the icing on the cake for the home team and send Eintracht home from the Estadio Metropolitano on the wrong end of a 5-1 scoreline.
