“I’m really looking forward to the Europa League”

Board member for sport Markus Krösche takes stock of Eintracht’s recently ended season, and looks ahead to the upcoming campaign.

Markus Krösche on ...

…last season: “We can be satisfied with finishing sixth in the table, especially considering the relatively big upheaval we had at the end of the last campaign. A lot of new players arrived, as did a new coaching team, with a new playing style. Then we also had the departures of players like Kolo Muani and Jesper Lindström. Such a big upheaval when you’re playing in three competitions certainly doesn’t help you establish a certain rhythm. We wanted to start well after the winter break, and we managed to beat Leipzig. But then Sasa Kalajdzic tore his cruciate ligament. Unfortunately, our winter transfers didn’t have the desired effect that we’d hoped for at the time. The second half of the season was difficult, so we’re satisfied with sixth place – but not with the way we played football at times.”

…Eintracht’s approach: “We know we have to improve in a lot of areas. For example, in terms of our killer instinct, determination and incisiveness in the final third. We have to create more chances and shooting opportunities to put ourselves in a position to win more games. We drew 14 times in the Bundesliga last season, and that’s a number that nobody likes – not us, nor the fans.”

…Eintracht football: “It’s not about a possession-based game, but we want to have a certain control. We have to be able to score goals and create dangerous situations when we have the ball. That’s something we have to improve. We have to get forward more quickly and with greater purpose, and create chances in the final third. That’s something we will specifically work on.”

Our aim is to keep playing in Europe, which is a big task for us as a club.

…the UEFA Europa League: “I’m really looking forward to the Europa League. It’s a great competition for us.”

…qualifying for European competition: “We have to focus on ourselves, but if you look back over the past ten years then we’re – aside from the top four – the club to have played in Europe the most. Our aim is to keep playing in Europe, which is a big task for us as a club. We have to push ourselves to the limit and keep improving.”

…the squad: “We’ve got a lot of experience in our squad with the likes of Trapp, Koch, Skhiri, Götze, Chandler and Marmoush. We haven’t just brought in youngsters; you always need a good mix. It hurt a lot that Seppl was out for such a long time last season. He would certainly have helped us achieve greater stability more quickly. Now we have to find ways to replace him. It’s not always about age, but about quality. What can we add that will help us win games and be successful, and what will make us more flexible and variable?”
