Varela is currently Under-20 international and also received call-ups for the first team of Uruguay in the World Cup qualification. He is under contract at Man United since 2013 and until 2018. He collected 21 appearances in the Under-21 Premier League, 33 in the Spanisch Segunda B (on loan to Real Madrid II), 4 in the English Premier League, 1 in the Chamions League and 3 in the Europa League.
