“I had to change something”

Niels Nkounkou on putting in extra shifts during the summer, learning lessons from last season, the upcoming cup game in Braunschweig and team-mate Nathaniel Brown.

Niels Nkounkou on ...

… the DFB Cup game in Braunschweig: “The cup isn’t easy, not even against teams from a lower division – we found that out the hard way last year. We obviously want to win on Monday and everyone’s going to give 100 percent, but we also know it’s not going to be easy and we’re not underestimating anyone. We want to return to Frankfurt with a win and then start preparing for Dortmund, where we also want to get three points.”

… pre-season: “I’m feeling great. Pre-season was tough but good. Before heading into a new campaign, I try to do a lot of work in advance. That’s why I work closely with a personal coach during the holidays. I take great care of my body so I can give 100 percent from the get-go. I’m definitely ready for the campaign, as are the rest of the team. Everyone’s looking forward to the opener.”

We want to play our football and be successful.

Niels Nkounkou

… objectives: “We’ll see where the season takes us. I don’t want to set any specific goals. We want to play our football and be successful.”

… lessons from last term: “Last year wasn’t a perfect one for me – I had to change something. I spoke to the coaching team about where I could make changes, whether it’s being more aggressive in challenges or holding my position and not breaking ranks too early. I’ve also made some defensive adjustments.”

… Nathaniel Brown: “He’s a good player and a good lad. We need to push each other in our position and depending on who’s playing, we’ll offer each other tips and advice before games. It’s more about a partnership and positive competition than a bitter rivalry.”
