Fans back at last

Saturday sees Eintracht host FC Augsburg for their first home match of the new Bundesliga season, as they look to make the Deutsche Bank Park a fortress once again.

Augsburg have been welcome opponents in Frankfurt of late, with Eintracht winning their past three home games against FCA.

Old face bringing new energy

The Bavarian side finished 13th in 2020/21 and have lofty ambitions for the new campaign: “We’re going to try to play a more attractive brand of football and improve our style of play,” explained Stefan Reuter, managing director for sport. “Coach Markus Weinzierl has brought a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the club and given us back a sense of belief.”

During the pre-season, Augsburg played four friendlies, drawing the first two 2-2 against Hamburger SV and Qarabag FK from Azerbaijan. They then went down 2-1 to Paris Saint-Germain before finishing things off with a bang against Cagliari Calcio, recording a 3-1 win. In the DFB Cup, FCA beat fifth-division side Greifswalder FC 4-2, before crashing to a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of Hoffenheim in their Bundesliga opener.

New signing: Jens Petter Hauge

The visit of FC Augsburg will hopefully be played out in front of as many as 25,000 fans, to the delight of Christopher Lenz: “I’m really looking forward to playing in front of these fans. When you’ve got fans like we do, it’s two or three times better. Playing in front of our own supporters brings out emotions that we then want to carry over onto the pitch.”

That sentiment was echoed by fellow summer signing Jens Petter Hauge: “We need to keep our heads up, keep working hard and concentrate on the next match. We need to play with more precision and concentration against Augsburg.” In short, everyone at Eintracht cannot wait to have fans back in the stands for the Augsburg match.
