Form: Target nearly achieved
Augsburg have had an average but relatively worry-free campaign, and sit in 11th place with 33 points from 29 matches. Having won just one of their first five games of the second half of the season, they’ve recently fluctuated between victory and defeat.
At the weekend the Bavarians played out their first draw since February with a goalless stalemate at home to Arminia Bielefeld. The result maintained their six-point cushion from Arminia, who currently occupy 15th spot.

Tactics: Strong on the counter
Having used a 4-4-2 formation for most of the first half of the campaign, coach Heiko Herrlich’s side have recently moved to a 4-2-3-1 system. Augsburg define themselves primarily through their defence – no team in the bottom half of the table have let in fewer goals than FCA (42). However, they have found the back of the opposition net just 29 times, with only Schalke, Bielefeld and Köln scoring less this season.
The ‘Fuggerstädter’ look for their opportunities to transition quickly and release their nippy attacking players. Four goals on the counter is the fifth-most in the league.
One to watch: Felix Uduokhai
Centre-back Felix Uduokhai joined Augsburg on loan from VfL Wolfsburg in August 2019, signing permanently last summer. Apart from the match against Leipzig in December which he missed due to illness, the 23-year-old has been an ever-present this season. Eighty-six per cent of Uduokhai’s passes have found their man, while his tackle success rate of 64 per cent is the seventh-best overall in the Bundesliga.
