Matthias Lehmann: Pressure is Part of the Game

'Matze' Lehmann has joined during the summer from St. Pauli - Eintracht's next opponent (kick-off Monday 25th of July at 20.15h CET). The defensive midfielder signed a three year contract. This interview was taken from tomorrow's match programme.

You joined Eintracht only a few months ago and already in the second match of the season you will face your former team St. Pauli. What is that like for you?
I am looking forward to meeting my old team mates and I am hoping for a good match with a happy end for Eintracht.

What were the reasons for your move to Frankfurt?
Mainly the ambitions of Eintracht as a club and the chance to be part of achieving lots with Frankfurt.

What is your first impression of the city, the team and the fans?
The city is much nicer than its image. The team is great and has lots of potential. I have not been here that long yet but as with St. Pauli the fans create a brilliant atmosphere.

Which games are you looking forward to the most?
Of course the ones against St. Pauli.

What is training like with Armin Veh and Reiner Geyer?
It is a lot about passing modes which is important for our game, and there is also enough fun involved.

How are you getting on with the team?
I have been accommodated well and luckily did not have to practice any embarrassing or funny welcoming rites.

What is your personal goal?
To get promoted and to stay fit and healthy.

The pre sesaon period was pretty short, was it a strain on you and the other players?
It was OK. The preparation period is always a little unpleasant but that is part of the game!

The team was 2-0 down away to Fürth but turned the match in the end. Does being the favourite put presssure on the team?
Pressure is also part of the game. We live up to that role and try to achieve the best for the club.

How important was the win last week?
Very important! To turn a match and to win it 3-2 is worth more than winning 4-0.

Marco Russ has joined VfL Wolfsburg, how important was he for the team?
Marco is a great guy. Him leaving is a pity but that is what the business is like. He was at the club for a long time and important for Eintracht. But now others have got the chance to fill the gap.

How long will it take for the team to level itself?
I hope this will happen fast!

With which team mate do you share hotel rooms?
With the 'goal octopus'! (Goalkeeper Thomas Kessler).

What do you do in your spare time?
Shopping, playstation, cinema and so on.

You have gained know-how in the top flight and in 2. Bundesliga, what is the big difference between the two?
In any Bundesliga match every error will be taken advantage of, as one could see last season. 2. Bundesliga games are tougher but the division is not as rough as it used to be.

At 1860 Munich you were team captain at the age of 22, the youngest one in the club's history. Was that difficult for you?
Yes and no. It was a great experience for me from which I gained lots.

The best moment of your footballing career?
Promotion to Bundesliga with St. Pauli.

The best football player of all times?
Maradona.

Using mobile phones is banned on the team bus. How do you pass the time during long away trips?
Luckily that is only the rule on matchdays between the hotel and the stadium. A long bus trip without mobile phone is impossible!
