Eagles sign Markus Schubert on loan

The 22-year-old goalkeeper has joined Eintracht on loan from FC Schalke 04 until the end of the season.

Eintracht Frankfurt have reached an agreement with FC Schalke 04 over the loan signing of goalkeeper Markus Schubert until the end of the 2020/21 season. The 22-year-old Freiburg-born stopper has made 40 appearances in Bundesliga 2 as well as nine outings in Germany’s top flight. Before joining the Gelsenkirchen club in 2019, the six-time German U21 international came through the youth ranks and made his breakthrough as a professional footballer at Dynamo Dresden.

Breakthrough in 2018/19

The 1.87-metre goalkeeper helped Dresden achieve promotion to the second tier in 2015/16 before establishing himself as the club’s first-choice custodian over the following seasons, making 32 competitive appearances for the club from the east of the country in 2018/19. After joining Schalke, Schubert made nine appearances in his debut season in Germany’s top flight and also featured once in the DFB Cup. Interestingly, he made his Bundesliga debut on 15 December 2019 against Eintracht whom he will be representing until the end of the current campaign, wearing the number 23 shirt.

We feel we have great strength in depth in the goalkeeper department this season.

“Great strength in depth in the goalkeeper department”

“In Markus Schubert, we have signed a promising German youth international goalkeeper who has already proven himself at Bundesliga level,” said Eintracht board member Fredi Bobic. “Markus will be given every opportunity to develop further in Frankfurt under Jan Zimmerman and alongside Kevin Trapp. The coaching team, and Jan in particular, were unanimously in favour of Markus as the club’s new second-choice goalkeeper. We feel we have great strength in depth in the goalkeeper department this season.”
