Bum Kun Cha was part of the classic 80ies team including the likes of Grabowski, Hölzenbein, Nickel and Pezzey, the team which won the UEFA Cup in 1980 and the German DFB Cup in 1981. Cha was at the club for four years and scored 46 league goals in 122 Bundesliga matches for Eintracht, plus various more in the domestic and European cup competitions. He later joined Bayer Leverkusen and won the UEFA Cup with them also, and he still holds the record of being booked only once in 308 league matches.
Tony Yeboah joined the team around 10 years later and again it was a classic team performing "Football 2000" as it was called in the early 90ies. Uwe Bein, Andy Möller, Uli Stein, Jay Jay Okocha - the squad was bursting with talent and missed winning the title in a close finish in 1991/92. Yeboah (68 league goals in 123 matches) became top scorer twice, the first African Bundesliga team captain even had his own fan club "Zeugen Yeboahs" (translating into Yeboah's Witnesses).
Due to poular demand the event was hosted at the large entry halls of the Commerzbank Arena's business area, and it was a complete sell-out. All seats were taken, people were standing in the alleys and on the gallery. When the two heroes came down the stairs they received standing ovations and were pretty taken by the warm and heartfelt welcome.
And then a magic evening unfolded, hosted by museum regular Beve who came well prepared and touched numerous issues with those two legends bringing the glorious times of their spells at Eintracht very much back to life. Bum Kun Cha's ever so charming wife Oh Un Mi took over as translator and took the audience by storm. She talked about Bum Kun's abilities to run and to train hard and joked about his former team mates acting rather to the opposite which in her view was a perfect match altogether. Together they explained the meaning of Bum Kun's name - translating into something along the lines of "Tiger - Root - Car" and they spoke about difficulties of the beginning of their time in Germany. Cha was one of the very first Asians joining a Bundesliga team.
Tony Yeboah on the other hand explained that he did not want to leave the club but that it was not possible to stay (he had fallen out with the manager at the time). And yes, he was so glad to be back and proud of being received so warmly by the fans. He praised the players of his squad back in the days who made it easy for him to score so many goals. "Yes I am proud to be the first African Bundesliga top scorer ever but that doesn't mean I was better than the others. I had plenty of team mates setting me up to score and that along with the support of the fans gave me the confidence to score all those goals." What a great man. He also confirmed that he likes the local drink (apple wine) and was well surprised when a fan presented a life-size shirt number 9 tattoo on his back, with Yeboah written underneath it.
Towards the end host Beve handed over flowers to both of them - the flowers they had never received from the club in the first place when they were transferred elswhere. The evening was over far too soon for everyone involved although it lasted nearly two hours, and it left plenty of smiles on many faces that night. After the show Tony and Bum Kun signed shirts, cards and posters for nearly another hour. And the magic of the evening had gotten hold of everyone who was lucky enough to have made it to the Eintracht museum that night.
