Rönnow off to Schalke on loan

Goalkeeper heading to Gelsenkirchen for the rest of the season.

Bundesliga clubs Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Schalke 04 have agreed terms for a season-long loan for Frederik Rönnow. The goalkeeper moved to SGE from Bröndby IF in the summer of 2018 but injuries have blighted his time with the club since then.

21 matches, five clean sheets

The 28-year-old keeper, who has won seven caps for Denmark so far in his career, has made 21 appearances for Eintracht, keeping five clean sheets in the process. In his two seasons at the club, he has proved to be a team player and a valuable member of the squad as well as a solid presence between the posts when called upon. Highlights of his SGE career thus far include a 3-0 win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen and the 2-1 win away to Arsenal, when he kept the Eagles in the match – and in the hunt for a place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League – with his first-half exploits. Head coach Adi Hütter has always been keen to state that the club has “two number one goalkeepers in terms of pure quality”, and Ronnöw is keen to prove his status as first-choice between the sticks for Schalke 04 during his loan period. His contract at Frankfurt runs until 30 June 2022.

Freddy’s attitude has always been absolutely impeccable and he’s always put the team first, which is why we certainly did not want to stand in his way. We’d like to wish him all the very best for the rest of the season.

“Freddy’s attitude has always been absolutely impeccable”

“From a purely sporting point of view, there was no reason for us to let Freddy go as he has a great reputation, both as a goalie and as a person,” said board member Fredi Bobic. “On the other hand, we don’t want to stand in the way of an opportunity for him to show what he’s capable of on a regular basis in the Bundesliga, and it looks as if Freddy will have a better opportunity of doing that at Schalke – particularly as he wants to make a case for himself with the European Championships coming up next year. Freddy’s attitude has always been absolutely impeccable and he’s always put the team first, which is why we certainly did not want to stand in his way. We’d like to wish him all the very best for the rest of the season.”
