Late Goal Seals Third Defeat in 2011

Eintracht lost 0-1 at home to Moenchengladbach today. A solid performance by the Eagles was not enough to collect the first points in 2011. De Camargo sealed Gladbach's win with his 84th minute match winning goal.

43,700 witnessed a tense game in which Eintracht had an ambitious first half with various chances to score goals and allowing little in defense. After an eventful week with transfers and injuries team and fans were happy to see the return of Russ and Franz in the back four, Tzavellas was back as left defender. Compared to last week’s game in Hamburg Rode was back on the bench, Clark out with an injury, Gekas and also Petkovic did not start – Martin Fenin filled the Greek’s place up front and Pirmin Schwegler came back after his suspension. Finally Brazilian midfielder Caio replaced Altintop.

Gladbach manager Frontzeck left new signing and ex Eintracht player Michael Fink (recently at Besiktas) on the bench and Michael Bradley seems to be on his way to join Aston Villa.

After his failed transfer to Dinamo Moscow in the week Caio did not seem to be irritated at all and showed an impressive performance with a lot of impulse in Eintrachts attacking play. He came closest to score a goal in the first 45 minutes, but his deflected shot hit the post after half an hour. He alone had five of 10 shots in Eintracht’s good first half. The opponent looked harmless and only had one scoring opportunity when Neustaedter did not find the end of an Idrissou pass just before half time.

For the Eagles Fenin, Meier and Franz had further attempts apart from Caio but despite being in control of the game with 64% possession and 10-2 shots it was 0-0 at half time.

Moenchengladbach’s spirit and body language both looked different after the break. It was a tight match now and much more even than in the first half. Eintracht keeper Oka Nikolov did well to be the first at the end of a clever Reus through ball just after the game had kicked off again, and later on he made a goal line save from a de Camargo shot (70’).

Michael Skibbe brought on Gekas and later also Amanatidis and Altintop. Eintracht’s biggest chance in the second half fell to Meier who was free on goal after a nice run by Koehler but his shot went wide (76’). With six minutes to go Gladbach scored from a counter attack, de Camargo converted an Idrissou cross from close range. Four minutes later Reus could have netted the second but Nikolov saved his chip (88’).

De Camargo’s goal remained the only one in the game and Frankfurt lost three in a row now after the winter break, no points have been collected so far in 2011. Once again Eintracht seemed in charge, controlling the game and being solid at the back, once again the they lost.

Next week the Eagles will travel to play SC Freiburg who won the earlier Sunday game 1-0 away to Stuttgart. The match will again kick off on Sunday at 17.30h CET.
