Eagles return to winning ways

An own goal and a late Stefan Ilsanker strike secured a deserved 2-0 victory for dominant Eintracht Frankfurt at FC Augsburg on Saturday afternoon.

Raphael Framberger put through his own net to give Eintracht the lead eight minutes into the second half after a string of Rafal Gikiewicz saves had kept the Eagles at bay in the first. Ilsanker’s third Bundesliga goal sealed the points for Adi Hütter’s side, who registered their first victory since Matchday 3.

Tuta in for Abraham

There was just one change to the Eintracht team that started the six-goal thriller at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach in midweek. With David Abraham suspended following his red card against the Foals, Brazilian defender Tuta was handed his first start since the defeat to Bayern Munich on Matchday 5.

No way past Gikiewicz

Florian Niederlechner and Alfred Finnbogason both tested Kevin Trapp inside the opening 20 minutes at the WWK-Arena, but it was Filip Kostic who went closest to an early breakthrough when his low show was tipped wide of the far post by Augsburg goalkeeper Gikiewicz. The FCA shot-stopper was forced into action again soon afterwards when Kostic headed Aymen Barkok’s cross into the 33-year-old’s arms following a rapid counter.

Trapp had to be on his toes to thwart Finnbogason from close range, but Eintracht continued to create the better chances before the interval: Kostic headed Erik Durm’s cross just wide, before Durm rattled the far post with a curling effort from the edge of the box. André Silva and Amin Younes both went close in the final moments of the half but neither managed to get the better of the impressive Gikiewicz.

A helping hand

Eintracht and Kostic picked up where they left off at the end of the first half, the Serbian’s deflected strike forcing Gikiewicz into action within minutes of the restart. It was an own goal that eventually gave the Eagles a lead they thoroughly deserved, as Jeffrey Gouweleeuw’s attempted clearance from Silva’s cross rebounded off the unfortunate Framberger and into the Augsburg net.

Younes’ low shot was held by Gikiewicz as SGE remained the dominant force, before Ilsanker secured all three points with a powerful finish from fellow substitute Steven Zuber’s pass. The comfortable 2-0 victory consolidates Eintracht’s place in the top half of the Bundesliga table.

Summary

The Eagles could have won by a much more handsome scoreline at the WWK-Arena, but Hütter will be thrilled with the manner in which his side ended their winless Bundesliga run on Matchday 13. If Eintracht can keep playing like this after the turn of the year, it will only be a matter of time before Hütter’s charges start to climb the table.
