“We held our own for long periods”

Dino Toppmöller, Mario Götze and Robin Koch analyse the 3-1 loss in Dortmund.

Head coach Dino Toppmöller: “BVB deserved to win, judging by the first half in particular. We were up against one of the best eight teams in Europe. It’s never easy in this stadium, but we held our own for long periods and can build on this performance. We weren’t bold enough or accurate enough to cause BVB more problems defensively. It was a decent away performance for large spells, which is frustrating – but on the whole we were okay.”

Robin Koch: “We made a good start, partly thanks to the goal. That’s how we’d planned [to start the game] – with courage. BVB increased the pressure after that, played a lot of diagonal balls and had a lot of the ball in the penalty area. That’s how [their equaliser] came about. BVB have a great deal of quality and they closed us down well. There’s no shame in losing here.”

Mario Götze: “You have to continue to pose a threat to get anything here, particularly on the counterattack. We didn’t give much away, but we couldn’t trouble our opponents sufficiently on the break. We weren’t able to do that often enough.”
