Jonathan de Guzman to leave Eagles

Eintracht and the midfielder have agreed not to extend the latter’s expiring contract.

Jonathan de Guzman made 67 appearances in his three years for Eintracht Frankfurt.

After Gelson Fernandes and Marco Russ, who are both hanging up their boots, Jonathan de Guzman has become the third team stalwart to leave the club, although his next destination is unknown.

The Canadian-born Dutch international joined Frankfurt from SSC Napoli and lifted the DFB Cup trophy in his first season with Eintracht, featuring in the starting XI against FC Bayern Munich in the final. The 32-year-old central midfielder made 67 appearances in his three years at the club, with injuries limiting him to just nine matches this term. His best season with the Eagles came in 2018/19, when he played 28 matches in the German top flight and another nine in the UEFA Europa League as the team went all the way to the semi-finals.

“I will think back on my time with Eintracht Frankfurt like no other club, not just because of the success we had on the field but also the great atmosphere that there is in the stadium and the team spirit that we had,” the player said. “I’m grateful for the three exciting years I had here, with the Cup win and the Europa League celebrations being the absolute highlights. Eintracht Frankfurt is an exceptional club!”
