Inter Milan's last visit to Frankfurt was not all that long ago, with the Italians featuring in the 'Frankfurt Main Finance Cup' to mark the opening of the 2014/15 season. Inter went 1-0 up in that exhibition game, but Eintracht fought back to win 3-1. The backdrop to the teams' next meeting is rather different, of course, with a place in the Europa League quarter-finals at stake over the two legs, the second of which takes place at the San Siro in Milan next week.
UEFA Cup successes
The tie not only brings together two clubs boasting a rich history and huge numbers of fans, but also two former winners of the competition in its previous format: the UEFA Cup. While Eintracht won the title in 1980, Inter have lifted the trophy several times and were even serial champions in the 1990s, winning it three times (1991, 1994 and 1998). However, they were also knocked out of the competition in the first round on three occasions in the same decade, including twice as defending champions (in 1991/92 against Boavista FC and in 1994/95 against Aston Villa). The Nerazzurri also lost to FC Schalke 04 on penalties in the second leg of the 1997 UEFA Cup final.
Kick-off: Thursday 7 March 2019, 18:55 CET, UEFA Europa League Round of 16, first leg.
