“I want to be back on the pitch”

Jetro Willems is battling his way back after his cruciate ligament tear and tells us how the past months have been for him, as well as explaining the timeline for his comeback.

Jetro, how are you?
“I’m fine, I’m training a lot and getting better week by week. I’m enjoying being part of the team again.”

How have you been coping with the injury?
“It was obviously tough because I couldn’t do what I love – and that’s play football. On the other hand, the coronavirus break gave me the time to be with my family, which was wonderful. Now I’m just happy to be back among my teammates again.”

When will we be seeing you back out on the pitch?
“It’s hard to give you an exact date because it was a serious injury. I might be back in two months, I might not. I’m making progress but we have to take it one day at a time. I hope it’ll be as soon as possible though.”

I can tell you one thing that I am sure of every day: I just want to be back on the pitch.

How was the past season for you at Newcastle United?
“It was a good season for me – up until the injury. Prior to that I’d been playing and able to showcase my strengths.”

You scored the “NUFC TV Goal of the Season” in the match against Liverpool. How did that feel?
“It was absolutely brilliant and a real honour for me to receive that recognition. Even without the award it’s a great feeling to score against Liverpool. They’re the champions and had won the Champions League before that. It was something special.”

What are your aims for the coming season?
“If I can get back to training with the team in the next month, I’d consider that a success. But I can tell you one thing that I am sure of every day: I just want to be back on the pitch.”

What are you expecting from the friendly with Ajax and what did you think of the match against Eindhoven?
“Both of them are really good teams, and PSV Eindhoven also have an extremely young team with a lot of talent coming through. But by the end, you could tell that they were getting tired and we managed to take advantage of that. Against Ajax, it’ll no doubt be a different type of game as they have a number of players with a lot of experience at their club and they’re used to playing together. They’ve also got a different way of playing. It’s a great opportunity for us to really test ourselves against opponents with a lot of international experience.”
