Supporting children with cancer: Sebastian Rode helps mark 40th anniversary

A Frankfurt-based cancer charity is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and has enjoyed the support of the Eintracht captain for quite a few of those years already.

Forty years ago, in 1983, a charity was set up by the name of Hilfe für krebskranke Kinder (“Supporting children with cancer”) Frankfurt e.V. Sebastian Rode has been involved with the charity for a number of years now, and this year he will be the patron of their anniversary celebrations. “I’m delighted to be the patron of their anniversary and am fully committed to supporting the important work that they do,” the Eintracht captain said.

About a year ago, in summer 2022, 32-year-old Rode attended an event held by the charity at the Eintracht Museum. He got to know Jennifer Gotta, a graduate in medicine who works in the radiology department at Frankfurt University Hospital. When she was just six years old, Jennifer was diagnosed with cancer, but after numerous operations and rounds of chemotherapy, she was declared tumour-free and in remission. As well as being co-patron of the anniversary, she is also heavily involved in rowing and part of the German paralympic team.

Jenny’s strength and sheer love of life made a real impression on me.

“Jenny’s strength and sheer love of life made a real impression on me,” said a clearly very impressed Rode. “As a professional athlete, I know how important it is to be fit and healthy. What amazes me is how Jenny has overcome limitations to become a high-level sportswoman. She’s beaten cancer and is leading an active life. Jenny has helped me to understand even better how important it is to be committed to fighting cancer among children.”

“Helping, healing, researching”

Supporting children with cancer is all about “helping, healing and researching”, which has been the charity’s mantra since its foundation in 1983.
