“We showed heart and character”

Faride Alidou on his goalscoring Champions League debut against Tottenham and the lessons learned from that game ahead of meeting Leverkusen on Saturday.

Eintracht’s visit to London may have ended in defeat, but it was successful on a personal level for Faride Alidou. The summer signing from Hamburg came on for Christopher Lenz in the 70th minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and certainly impressed on his Champions League debut.

In the closing stages, the 1.86-metre winger popped up in the penalty area to head in a corner from Mario Götze and reduce the deficit to 3-2.

Faride, your first goal in your first Champions League game – how do you reflect on the evening at Tottenham on the following day?
“It was definitely a nice experience. I’m very happy that I got my first Champions League minutes and that I could contribute with a goal.”

What do you take away from this game?
“I certainly have a positive feeling. Even though we lost, the whole team gave 100 percent. Particularly in the last 30 minutes, we showed heart and character. I believe that such experiences only bind a team closer together.”

Another Champions League team visit Deutsche Bank Park on Saturday in Leverkusen. What kind of game are you expecting?
“Leverkusen have a very strong team but if we play with the same character that we did in the last half-hour at Tottenham, we have a chance of winning. That’s our aim.”
