“We want to go further”

Head coach Oliver Glasner discusses the start of the year, the main areas in training, his own expectations and why Daichi Kamada is joining training late.

Oliver Glasner on...

...the restart after the long winter break: “For me it’s nothing out of the ordinary, because in Austria they tend to have three or four weeks off. There was a good atmosphere in the dressing room right from the start, and it was good for everyone to take a break and process what had happened. That's why I see the break as positive. The boys now have to get back into their rhythm, so there will be lots of sessions on the ball.”

...his own expectations: “We’re picking up where we left off in terms of our performances and what we’ve worked for. I’ve told the players that we don’t want to get to where we were, but go further than where we were. That’s my expectation as coach.”

...the main areas in training: “We always train in a holistic way and will try to reduce the number of goals we concede. Defensive set pieces are an issue there.”

For me it’s about how we act on the day, how we want to work without the ball, how and where we press.

...the defence and who’s first choice: “It’s nice that we have a lot of options now everyone’s fit. Given that we have midweek games straight away, I’m glad to have alternatives again. Now it will become clear who’ll start in the first match of the year against Schalke. Every player has his own strengths, so we can react specifically from game to game.”

…training personnel: “Because Japan got further than Germany at the World Cup, Daichi Kamada is flying directly from Japan to Dubai and Mario Götze was in Frankfurt for the start of training. Tuta’s coming on Tuesday afternoon, Nacho and Mehdi Loune will be in Dubai.”

Mario Götze was in Frankfurt for the start of training.

…the established 3-4-3 system and the option of a back four: “I could show you a lot of clips where we’re playing a very different system. For me it’s about how we act on the day, how we want to work without the ball, how and where we press. We want to maintain this variability. But: the team feel comfortable, we’ve been very successful and I see no reason to throw everything into disarray.”

...transfer rumours: “As Markus Krösche said clearly: we don’t want to let go of any key players. And the feedback we’ve got from our players is that they want to stay with us and definitely play the second half of the season with us. With Jérôme Onguéné, it’s important for him to get playing time and get into a rhythm, which is why we’re open to letting him go out on loan.”
