Frankfurt stay in touch at the top

Eintracht Frankfurt continued their unbeaten start to the season and moved up to third in the table after coming from behind to defeat Dynamo Dresden 4-1, condemning their hosts to a sixth defeat.

Dreseden deservedly took the lead with a Christian Fiel free-kick (31'), before Theofanis Gekas hit back for the visitors with two headed goals in quick succession (35', 40'). Mo Idrissou added a brace late on (84', 86) to put the game beyond doubt.

Few chances

Frankfurt's blistering early season form had dipped recently, and three draws in the last five games had seen them drop off the pace at the top of the table. Nonetheless they pressured Dresden early on and dominated the first 15 minutes, but a series of interruptions for fouls and niggly tackles stopped their flow and allowed Dresden back into the match.

It was a largely even tie until the half hour mark, with few chances for either side. The game suddenly sparked into life though when Fiel broke the deadlock with a deflected free-kick from the edge of the area that left Frankfurt keeper Oka Nikolov powerless to stop the ball.

Gekas strikes back

Going behind seemed to breathe life into the visitors and they equalised minutes later when Gekas headed in powerfully at the near post following Pirmin Schwegler's corner. Gekas scored his second of the night just before the break, once again using his aerial ability to finish Sebastian Jung's right-wing cross and give his side a half-time lead.

After the break the game settled into the rhythm it had had prior to the goals: it was contested chiefly in the midfield and few chances were created. Dresden lacked ideas going forward and resorted to pumping long balls up to Mickael Pote, but these were dealt with easily by the visiting defence.

Comfortable win

It was a comfortable win in the end for Veh's troops as they controlled possession with ease and kept Dresden's rare forays forward at bay. Idrissou put the result beyond any doubt late on, first tapping into an empty net from Alex Meier's cross (84') before scoring an almost identical goal two minutes later, only this time from Benjamin Köhler's pass. Given their dominant second half performance it was a thoroughly deserved victory.

Dresden coach Ralf Loose will be disappointed his side were not more adventurous and they never looked like drawing level after going behind. Their bad run continues and the result leaves them down in 13th place.
