Fortuna Düsseldorf preview: Surprise package on the rise

Eintracht Frankfurt have their sights set on their next Bundesliga victory when they travel to Fortuna Düsseldorf on Monday for a fixture sandwiched between the Eagles' UEFA Europa League last-16 meetings with Inter Milan.

The teams' first encounter this season will linger long in the memories of Eintracht fans, with Adi Hütter's charges winning 7-1 in a breath-taking match under the Commerzbank-Arena floodlights in mid-October. Luka Jović is unlikely to forget the game any time soon either, having written his name in the record books by becoming the first Eintracht player to score five goals in a single game and the first Serbian to get three or more goals in 90 Bundesliga minutes. His strike partner Sébastien Haller netted the other two goals that day.

Reunion with Friedhelm Funkel

There will once again be a familiar face in the Düsseldorf dugout: Fortuna coach Friedhelm Funkel was in charge at Eintracht between 2004 and 2009 and steered the team to promotion to the Bundesliga in 2005. The following year, he guided the Eagles to the DFB Cup final and UEFA Cup qualification. Funkel has held the reins in Düsseldorf for the last three years and has likewise propelled them into the top flight, where they have surprised many onlookers by sitting in 11th place with 31 points from 24 matches. It is clear, then, that another tough task awaits Eintracht.
