Fernandes and Rebic book World Cup tickets

Gelson Fernandes and Ante Rebic – two of nine Eintracht players currently on international duty – helped their respective countries seal a place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia via the play-offs.

Qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup was on the line for Gelson Fernandes and Ante Rebic in the play-offs, and ultimately both were able to book their tickets to Russia with their respective nations. While Fernandes and Switzerland got the better of Northern Ireland with a narrow 1-0 away victory and a goalless draw at home, Rebic helped Croatia brush Greece aside 4-1 on home turf before drawing 0-0 away. Defensive midfielder Fernandes was an unused substitute for both of Switzerland's games. Rebic, meanwhile, made his first appearance for Croatia in two years when he was brought on as a 76th-minute substitute in the first leg. The 24-year-old attacker also featured for the last five minutes of the return fixture.

Elsewhere, Eintracht defender Carlos Salcedo played the full 90 minutes for Mexico in a 3-3 friendly draw in Belgium. Lukas Hradecky was an unused substitute for Finland in their 3-0 friendly win over Estonia, as was Mijat Gacinovic in Serbia's 2-0 triumph in China. Makoto Hasebe played 70 minutes of Japan's 3-1 friendly defeat to Brazil. Hradecky aside, all of Eintracht's other internationals will have another friendly match on either Monday or Tuesday. On 13 November Salcedo and Mexico are away to Poland, while the following day Gacinovic and Serbia face South Korea in Ulsan, and Hasebe and Japan meet Belgium in Bruges.

Luka Jovic played from start to finish for Serbia's U-21 side in a 3-1 win over Austria in European Championship qualification, scoring a penalty to put his team 2-1 up in the 87th minute. The U-21s play Armenia in their next game on Tuesday. Attacking midfielder Aymen Barkok likewise played the full 90 minutes for Germany's U-20s in a 2-2 draw with Italy in Chemnitz. They will now go up against England on Tuesday. Renat Dadashov is currently on duty with Azerbaijan's U-21s and played the entire game in a 7-0 defeat to Germany. Next up is a fixture with Kosovo on 14 November.
