“Mistakes well and truly punished”

Markus Krösche, Dino Toppmöller and Farès Chaibi analyse the 2-1 defeat to PAOK.

Board member for sport Markus Krösche: “We weren’t quite single-minded enough tonight and we failed to take our chances. We shouldn’t have conceded either of the goals that we did. We made too many simple mistakes and we need to be more consistent in the way we defend. We didn’t do that tonight and it’s something we need to work on. We played our brand of football very well, after the break in particular, but our mistakes were well and truly punished.”

Farès Chaibi: “We were obviously aiming to win the group – we’d rather have avoided going through the knockout round, but that’s the way it is. We’ll be looking to win that match though and make it through. We didn’t play consistently enough to take our chances and we’re going to have to work on that.”

Head coach Dino Toppmöller: “The result tonight is really annoying because it didn’t have to happen like that. Going 1-0 down was a kind of wake-up call for us and from that point onwards, we played really well – we created a lot of chances in the box and we managed to equalise. After that we also had a lot of big opportunities but the ball just wouldn’t go in. We made too many simple errors on the two goals we conceded, and up front, we lacked the killer instinct, and that’s why we ended up losing tonight.”
