FC Flora scouting report: League leaders in impressive form

Eintracht Frankfurt’s upcoming UEFA Europa League opponents are not only in fine form domestically, they also have a prolific goalscorer in their ranks in Erik Sorga.

Form

While Eintracht only returned to training three and a half weeks ago, 11-time league champions and seven-time cup winners FC Flora have already played 20 matches in the Estonian Meistriliiga, which is held between March and November each year. So far this season they have scored 61 goals (the second-most behind FCI Levadia Tallinn), conceded 14 (the fewest in the league) and currently top the standings with 52 points.

Tactics

Head coach Jürgen Henn usually sets his side up in an unconventional 4-2-3-1 system that features several young players at its core. At just 23, central defenders Märten Kuusk and Henrik Pürg have played more minutes than any of their team-mates this term. Nineteen-year-old Vladislav Kreida pulls the strings in Flora’s midfield, while Erik Sorga, 20, has been making a name for himself in attack. Eighteen-year-old Mark-Anders Lepik, who returned from a loan spell at FC Winterthur in the summer, made a major impact off the bench in Flora’s last qualifier, scoring the opener in the first leg against Nis before making it 2-2 in the return leg.

One to watch: Erik Sorga

Having netted 20 times in his previous 19 matches, Sorga failed to make the scoresheet for the first time since 18 June in last weekend’s 3-0 victory over bottom-of-the-table Maardu Linnameeskond. The striker remains top of the goalscoring charts after 20 matchdays, having scored in all but five of his 19 league appearances prior to Sunday’s victory. Despite his small stature, the 1.76-metre Estonian is more than capable of holding his own in a lone striker role. Indeed, with three headed goals to his name so far this term, he has a knack for appearing in the right place at the right time.
