EURO: Defending champions heading home

The second day of Round of 16 matches saw André Silva’s Portugal defeated 1-0 by Belgium.

Sunday evening’s Round of 16 saw another thriller, again with Frankfurt involvement. André Silva was not in Portugal’s starting line-up and was watching on from the bench in Budapest when Belgium took the lead in the 42nd minute.

Courtois thwarts Silva in the dying minutes

In the 70th minute, coach Fernando Santos finally turned to Silva, who was brought on in place of Diogo Jota. The Frankfurt forward did not take long to get into the game and start creating chances up front. In the 88th minute, Silva tried his luck with a first-time shot from inside the box, but Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois threw himself in the way and somehow kept the ball out.

The Red Devils thus managed to hold on to their 1-0 win and now find themselves in the quarter-finals, while Silva and defending champions Portugal are on their way home.
